A Special Day to Celebrate Freedom!
Have you ever heard of Juneteenth? It’s a very important day in American history — and a time to celebrate freedom, family, and fun!
Let’s break it down together so you can understand why Juneteenth is such a big deal.
📜 A Little Bit of History
A long time ago, in the 1800s, there were people in the United States who were enslaved, meaning they were not free and were forced to work without being paid. This was a very unfair and hurtful time in history.
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made a law called the Emancipation Proclamation, which said that all enslaved people were free. 🎉 But here’s the thing — not everyone heard the news right away.
It took a long time for the message to reach everyone.
📅 What Happened on Juneteenth?
On June 19, 1865, soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and told the people there that all enslaved people were finally free — more than two years after the law had been made.
That’s why we call it “Juneteenth” — a mix of the words June and nineteenth. It became a day to celebrate freedom, hope, and new beginnings!
